laughter as habit

Fast Take

Jill Wellock is a freelance writer near Phoenix, Arizona. She and her family left Olympia, Washington in 2013 in search of adventure and direct sunlight. She wrote as an Op/Ed columnist for WA State’s capital city newspaper The Olympian 2007-2009 and as a staff writer for Discover America 2009-2011. Refining her skills through Bay Path University’s MFA program, Jill graduated in 2023 with a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Nonfiction Writing.

Her work has also appeared in over 35 regional magazine articles in addition to the newsletters of TwinStar Credit Union, The Native American Chehalis Tribe and St.Peter Family Medicine Diabetes Care, and in advertising campaigns through Daniels-Brown Communications. Jill graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in English, and served as Campus Life (humor) Editor and then Associate Editor for an off-campus magazine, The Student Review. With a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Nonfiction Writing and a Teaching emphasis, Jill most loves humor writing, narrative nonfiction, and teaching.

Jill spends her days writing, reading, learning to love chickpeas and black beans in her new and often cursed plant-based diet, and laughing at Arizona’s venomous dangers with her best friend/soul mate/husband Matt and their lioness—er, golden retriever Cookie.
